Location / Geography

San Mateo is one of the larger suburbs on San Francisco Peninsula, California. San Mateo is located between Burlingame, Foster City and Belmont to the north, east and south respectively. Coyote Point Park, a peninsula with rocky outcrops is declared to be one of the best natural areas around San Francisco Bay. Today Coyote Point is the home to Coyote Point Museum one of the best natural history museums and wildlife centers in California. Earlier this Park was named "la Punta de San Mateo" by Spanish Navigators but further it was renamed as "Big Coyote" by cargo ship carrying grain. There are variety of habitats including mixed oak woodland, riparian zones and bay land marshes present here. San Mateo enjoys a mild Mediterranean Climate which is shielded from Pacific Ocean by the Montara Mountain range of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

San Mateo is located at 37"33'15"N, 122"18'47"W (37.554286, -122.313044). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.0 mi² (41.3 km²), 76.6% or 12.2 mi² of it is land and 23.4% or 3.7 mi² of it is water.
